REDUCING RAILWAY NOISE POLLUTION

Over 12 million EU inhabitants are affected by railway noise during the day and 9 million during the night. The rolling noise comes from the interaction between the wheels and the tracks, and can be reduced significantly through the introduction of modern rolling stock or retrofitting the old one. The use of noisy braking system will be progressively banned in the EU member states in the next coming years, with the objective of reducing railway noise pollution.

Ambrogio Intermodal is already fully engaged to achieve this ambitious objective and is progressively replacing cast-iron brake blocks on its freight wagons by “LL” blocks, made of composite materials. This replacement allows to achieve smoother running surfaces of wheels, therefore reducing rolling noise.
