2021 EUROPEAN YEAR OF RAIL

On 15th December 2020, the European Parliament approved the proposal to designate 2021 as the European Year of Rail.

The main objective of this initiative is to promote the train as a safe and environmentally friendly mode of transport, essential to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 according to the European Green Deal.

Transport alone accounts for about 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU and the railways are only responsible for 0.4% of it. Road is the leading mode of freight transport and carries 75% of inland freight: a significant part of it should shift onto rail and inland waterways to help reduce emissions in this sector as a more sustainable mode of transport.
